Once again American Giants has sold another original Muffler Man, this time from own collection. Because we found the Gray, GA Phillips 66 Cowboy last year and restored it, we decided to set it up at our Museum in IL instead of the one we already had.

HISTORY – This iconic fiberglass cowboy statue, crafted by International Fiberglass around 1966, was very likely a part of the Phillips 66 “Cowboy Campaign.” During this nationwide promotion, dozens of these larger-than-life cowboys were deployed to gas stations across the country to attract customers and embody the brand’s Western spirit. This particular statue was possibly one of a handful sent to Illinois, where it stood in Belleville when the campaign concluded. In the early 1970s, the statue was purchased by Leon Demand, who displayed it outside his computer store on Centerville Road. Over time, the cowboy was relegated to the weeds behind the business, largely forgotten. In 1988, Demand sold the statue to Mark Paule Auto Sales, where it spent the next decade on the sales lot. During this period, it was painted yellow and even held a go-kart frame, serving as a quirky advertisement. In 1998, the cowboy was acquired by Croft Trailer and relocated to Valley Park, MO where it was mounted high on a building platform, till it was brought down in a storm. In 2016, the statue was purchased by American Giants, and in 2017, a Southern Illinois fiberglass worker began a partial restoration, though the project was never fully completed.
