Original Chicago Bunyan – No Sale

This sale ran for two weeks in May 2025 and resulted in a high offer but this was declined by the owner since it was considerably lower than what these giants sell for. Deterents were the fact that the giant was missing feet and the paint colors were not desirable to interested buyers. The owner plans to fix the feet, repaint the giant and complete the legs and put the giant up for sale again sometime in 2026.

HISTORY  This iconic fiberglass Bunyan, crafted by International Fiberglass, is a well known fixture in the Chicago area. During the mid 60s, dozens of these larger-than-life Bunyans were made and sold to businesses and amusement parks across the country. Out of all the styles of Muffler Men this one was the most produced and certainly the most common. This particular statue was one of a handful of giants that ended up in the Chicago area, and appears to be one of the earlier models made. In the 1960s the giant was installed on the roof of Kallemeyn Auto Rebuilders in Evergreen Park and at the time still had his boots. At some point during the years the boots were removed for unknown reasons but possibly because they snapped off during a storm or because of wind damage. The shoeless giant was then attached with a bracket to a short brick wall and secured with wires. In 2011 he was repainted and looked pretty good but sadly came down in a massive storm in 2017. The giant lay in pieces on the roof for over a year before being brought inside. American Giants was considered for a restoration but it never materialized. In 2024 restoration began on the giant before it was decided to sell him in 2025.

INFO  Statue is roughly 19 ft tall with an estimated weight of 300 pounds (could be more). Statue is complete other than his Bunyan boots which are missing. The giant is in various stages of restoration and is sold as is. The head has been restored and repainted.Torso and arms are restored and have also been repainted. Pants are partially restored and sanded but have not been painted. The boots are missing and replacements will need to be made and installed. The seller is willing to complete the painting for an additional fee or the buyer can pick up as is. Buyer is responsible for pick up and transport. The giant is located at Guardian Auto Rebuilders in Evergreen Park, Chicago. Please reach out to the the offer email above for any other questions and direct your questions to American Giants not Guardian as we are handling this sale for them.

  1. That’s too bad. Seemed like a decent offer. Hopefully the market will have another giant to consider in the not too distant future. AG is the premier site for buyers and sellers to connect IMHO.
