HISTORY – Calija was manufactured by International Fiberglass of Venice, California around 1965 for Mohawk Petroleum, an independent California gasoline company founded in 1932. Created to attract motorists from the highway, giants like Calija became some of the most recognizable roadside advertising figures of the mid-century era.

After his time at a Southern California Mohawk service station, Calija was acquired by educator Warren Binzley. He was first displayed at Apple Valley High School before becoming a fixture on the Binzley family property, where he remained for nearly sixty years.

Throughout those decades, Calija became far more than an advertising figure. He was dressed in dozens of costumes for holidays, birthdays, school events, weddings, and community celebrations, becoming a beloved local landmark for generations.

Included with the giant is what is believed to be his original International Fiberglass transport trailer, along with the original 1969 California Certificate of Ownership issued to Mohawk Petroleum Corporation. Few surviving giants retain this level of documented provenance or an original trailer.

Today, Calija is believed to be the last surviving giant associated with Mohawk Petroleum. His documented history, original paperwork, family ownership, and remarkable preservation make him one of the most historically significant fiberglass advertising giants ever offered for sale on American Giants

INFO – The sale includes both the complete Muffler Man as well as his original International Fiberglass Trailer. Both are being sold as-is, where-is, and may exhibit damage, cracks, and possibly missing pieces. The feather is not missing and has been kept by the family and is also included in the sale. The Muffler Man stands 21 feet tall and weighs approximately 400 pounds or more. Removal is the responsibility of the buyer. The buyer will coordinate payment, pickup dates, and logistics directly with the seller. The seller will allow up to two weeks for the buyer to remove the statue and trailer from the property. Time extensions must be requested and approved before this sale is complete. American Giants is available to answer questions about the history of the pieces and offer suggestions regarding transportation and restoration. The Muffler Man is located near Glendale, CA and is considered by American Giants to be in very good overall condition given its age.

HISTORY – This fiberglass bull statue is one of many similar bull statues made around the 1960s. It was mass produced to the point where dozens of these bulls still exist today although they are now considered vintage and are sought after. They are all about the same size, wear halters, and have their left hind legs in a forward position. Some of them like the one for sale here, were installed with signs in their side for advertising, while others did not of the signs installed. It is likely these statues were made by Sculptured Advertising of Sparta, WI. Research shows that the ones with the message board signs on their sides were either produced for Sirloin Stockade restaurants or ended up being used extensively by the chain. This and other bulls statue mascots was known as “Sir Loin.” Sirloin Stockade was established in 1966 in Oklahoma City. The original location had a bull statue and over the years the buisness grew to 80 locations in eight states. The bulls were built to represent Hereford cattle and were originally painted with red coats and white markings. They were often sold on trailers so that the statues could be moved around to different locations. This particular bull came from a place called “Wades Herefords” near Hugo, OK. Originally it was located in Oklahoma City, OK.

INFO – Statue is roughly 9ft tall with an estimated weight of 250 pounds (could be more). The bulls ear and horn have been reattached since the pictures were taken, holes in both sides from the message board being removed. The Bull still has the fiberglass plates under his feet for bolting down. Buyer is responsible for removal and transport. Seller will give up to a month for buyer to come get the giant.
